Dream Cave Hotel
Cappadocia
There
was a time when the term ‘roughing it’ could be thrown
around with some semblance of credibility. We’ve all
been or known travellers who like to boast of hard times
on the road, sleeping rough in train stations, cockroach-infested
hostels and parks. Just a few notches on the belt of
adventure. But sleeping in a cave? That, I thought, is
pretty hardcore. Then I visited Goreme in Cappadocia,
Turkey, where I found out that bedding down in a cave
isn’t quite the trogolodyte trauma I envisaged it to be.
Try a choice of caves with a range of comforts from
central heating, comfy beds, furniture and hot water to
satellite TV and breakfast cooked for you every morning.
The walls and floors are distinctly volcanic rock, but
there’s a door over the entrance and glass panes in the
carved windows, framed by curtains. There’s even a
doilies on the bedside table. Hardly a den of discontent.
Turks have been living in hand-dug volcanic cave
dwellings since the early days of Christianity. Over the
past twenty years modern-day government have tried to
resettle cave inhabitants into new ‘European-style’
houses, considering the old cave dwellings unsafe and
unfit to live in. However, a boom in tourism – and
western travellers’ thirst for quirk – has seen the
trend reversed, with locals setting up scores of hotels
and pensions in the caves that dot the fantastical
Cappadocian landscape.

Rooms ,With
views out over the other-worldly town of Goreme, the
Dream Cave is one such hovel; a three star hovel at that.
Jumping off the bus from Istanbul, you’ll be met by
plenty of touts offering deals and discounts at several
similar establishments, most of which offer up the same
friendly fare – a room in a cave, simple but good food
and the exuberant hospitality that that generally
defines a Turk in the tourism biz.
Dream Cave is one of the safest bets being family run.
It offers 13 rooms, 32 beds and 3 Suites, although only
four of the rooms are located in a cave proper. All
rooms have private shower and toilet or bathtub. Board
includes a fresh Turkish Continental breakfast of
omelette, tomato, cucumber, olives and feta cheese. Then
there’s the never-ending flow of apple tea or thick and
rich Turkish coffee. |
Description
of Goreme ,
Goreme itself is one of
the best places to explore Cappadocia from. It’s flush
with tourist amenities and has a distinct backpacker
vibe but retains a relaxed atmosphere. Most services
are in the centre of the small town with one to four-star
hostels and hotels dotted around the giant rock
mushroom formations. Best bet is to base yourself here
and hire a scooter or car to explore outlying villages
and historical sites. If you do want to escape the
tourist throng (not that ‘throngs’ that often),
there’s plenty of alternative accommodation in nearby
villages, mostly of the non-cave variety, though.
